There is always so much to do and so little time so we try to speed up everything in our lives to make sure we can manage to do as much as we can. This is not only true about our approach to doing things done but also with how we connect with people.
But people are not things and they are much deeper and more complicated than they appear.
When we are in the habit of only looking at the surface and making our mind about people so quickly, we are tempted to make the following mistakes:
- We misjudge people based on how they appear and/or what they are doing now
- We stereotype and assume things about people that are not true
- We compare other’s external life and appearances with our internal life and this gives us a wrong impression.
So let’s learn to do better. Here are three suggestions:
- Get out of the habit of judging people unless you really have to. We never know what’s going on in someone’s life unless we go deep and we don’t have time nor we need to go deep into everyone’s life. Accept people as they are and enjoy experiencing a variety of people.
- Stay humble and recognize your limits in knowing people. Stay curious to learn more about people, their culture and their background and with this your understanding of people gets deeper and you appreciate their differences better.
- Don’t compare yourself with others. It gets you nowhere. Instead spend time to clarify your goals, standards and personal rules and compare yourself with them.
