As business owners, we can’t do everything ourselves. At one point or another, we need to delegate some of our workload to our staff. But when it comes to delegation, we are not sure how much we can trust. Our new employees keep disappointing us with their lack of capacity.  So here is some suggestions for when you need to delegate your work to your team:

  1. Do your homework before hiring her: If your employee keeps disappointing you, it’s not her fault but yours. This means you failed to hire the suitable person for the job. So make sure you take your time to hire the person you need. We usually speed up the hiring process since we need the new employee urgently or we are too busy with other tasks at hand.
  2. First train then delegate: Being too busy, we hardly find time to sit with our employee and tell him clearly what we expect of him. What we usually do instead, we simply ask him quickly what needs to be done and expect to see a perfect job is done.It is important to train your newly hired employee on few things that he doesn’t have the skill or knowledge we need and then mentor him for few days until he reaches an acceptable level.
  3. Be patient: Even if you hired a highly skillful person for the job, still there is a gap between what you expect and what he can do. Stay patient, monitor his work regularly for the first few days and even sometimes few weeks, give him feedback and eventually you will see that he is getting along well with the tasks.
  4. Embrace the differences:You can hardly, if ever, find a person who would do the things you delegate exactly how you would do it. There are certain differences between you and that person in regards to style, taste and experience that no training can compensate. So as long as she is doing the job on an acceptable level you should give her a chance to prove herself. It is possible that after a while when you give her the chance to try her own style, she might surprise you with a quality you never expected of her.
