The beginning is the time when you feel lonely with your vision. You just started with a great passion, strong belief that it would work but there are lots of uncertainties. Those who love you might support you but not always because they believe in what you are going to accomplish but because they love you. And the rest of the people laugh at you and your idea. At the beginning, you realize that you are losing more and more regular friends. People are not sure what you are up to, you are not that predictable and reliable anymore and they perceive that this could be dangerous. They want to stay far but not so far to lose you forever just far enough to not get hurt when you fall but close enough to come back to you when they see your success. You can’t blame people since they do their best to protect their own interests. But nevertheless, their responses to your start of the journey, impact both your confidence and your external resources. It would be easier to start the journey when more people support you both to cheer you up when you are down and helping you here and there when you are in trouble. But there have been too many failed start-ups around that have made people cautious about the beginners. Beginners are unpredictable and investing in them with time, money or other resources could turn out to be a mistake. Not all like you are so keen to accept the possibility of failure for the hope of making something that matters. You are the owner of your adventure and you are to find ways to increase the number of supporters to your cause. Here are some suggestions that help the beginning go better:

  1. Stay realistic: don’t take it personal. This is the reality that you choose to enter. Stay realistic about your expectations, understand people’s position, forgive them if they don’t share your enthusiasm and put your focus into your work. More people will join you once you start showing some results.
  2. Don’t talk to just everyone: See who matters to know about your new business and avoid the rest. This way you stay more focused on your work and also get less negative useless feedback from those who even might not care enough to listen to what you are saying and just reject your ideas.
  3. Communicate like a professional: The amount of passion you feel inside is not understandable by everyone. So besides telling people how passionate you are, organize your thoughts to tell them about how you have calculated both risks and benefits and how you are planning to survive the unexpected situations. People trust a rational (looking) person over overly emotional one. Especially potential investors.
  4. Listen to their feedback: It is common to fall in love so much with your ideas that you don’t see different aspects of it. Listening to the feedback you receive from those who you can trust, will mitigate the risk of failure and can speed up your progress.
